What is the difference between the information I put into Career Foresight and what I put in my Resume?
Your resume is just a summary of your accomplishments. Some of the things that you keep in Career Foresight will wind up there, but most will not. Instead of trying to remember everything at once when it's time to put your resume together, Career Foresight lets you track your accomplishments as you go. Career Foresight also holds information that will help you make better decisions, remember important ideas, and manage your career that don't belong on your resume.
How do I find out what attributes employers who I might want to work for are looking for?
Although there are "core attributes" or things that most employers are looking for such as teamwork, leadership, and communication, there are also very specific ones that employers in the field you're interested in also want to see from you. The answer to this question is - ask, and don't just assume you know. Ask multiple people – your teachers or professors if you're still in school. Ask people in the business you want to work in. If you don't know anyone, then go meet someone. Asking questions to multiple people is like getting the answers to the test beforehand, and it's not cheating. Having an idea of what they're looking for from you, and being prepared to show them that you have those attributes, with specific examples, will always set you apart, and make people wonder how you got so lucky. Showing up without knowing this is a huge risk that can be easily avoided.
My daughter already has more than she can handle in school, so adding something else to her plate doesn't make any sense, no matter how valuable it will be for her. How much time will she have to spend to make Career Foresight worthwhile?
Career Foresight is perfect for people who are very busy, because you can accomplish a lot of things in less than a minute. This program was designed to be convenient, so it can be used on mobile devices to let our clients make valuable progress anytime and anywhere. Your daughter is probably bombarded throughout her day with things that can be helpful to her career, if she's able to make sense of it and keep track of it all. Career Foresight makes it easy for her to do this on the fly, so she can build a powerful arsenal of information, contacts, experiences and goals that will make the investment that you are both making in her education pay off with a career that she's excited about.
There are quite a few sections in Career Foresight. Do you have to fill them all out?
Career Foresight was designed to let our clients use as much or as little of the application as they want. None of the sections are required to be filled out. We encourage our clients to think about their purpose and elevator pitches, and complete them, because everything else that they do in school and in their jobs should work toward making those real. However, no one is forced to fill out anything that they don't want to. Everyone can make their own choice to use it as little or as much as they think they need to so they can be competitive and enjoy a career that they're excited about.
Why is there a section for contacts? I can track my contacts on Linkedin, Facebook, MySpace, my phone, or in my e-mail system, so I don't see why I'd add any to Career Foresight.
The "Everyone" section of Career Foresight serves 2 purposes. First, it's a reminder that everyone you meet can somehow help you with your career, and you're always interviewing with them, whether you realize it or not, or whether you like it or not. Second, it's a place to keep track of contacts who might not be actual friends, but who you've met professionally, or casually, who you may be able to work with in the future. By having a specific place for these "weak ties" or people who you do not know very well, you are building a valuable network. The Communications Log lets you track communications you've had, and can be a reminder to reach out to people from time to time to keep your link alive. Just as with any section of the program, there is no requirement to use it if you have another way to manage this important element of your career and your life.
How can I remove the advertisements?
The "Pro" version will allow you to replace the advertisements with items that inspire you. You can put pictures, quotes, or stories that help you remember your purpose and that you're excited about. We designed this to be very affordable so everyone can have this ability if they want it. It's $3.00 a month, or $19 a year and you can register here.
What do people who don't use Career Foresight do to manage their careers?
There are many alternatives to using Career Foresight to help manage your career. The issue is that critical information usually winds up in a lot of different places, with ideas, people, accomplishments, and goals spread out across papers, computer files, mental notes, etc, that never wind up coming together in a single place. Some people don't proactively manage their careers, but instead "go with the flow" until something better comes along, until things at their job get too bad to stick around, or until their employer shows them the door. Career Foresight is a powerful solution to help our clients see the big picture of their careers and to help them focus on getting where they want to go.
